Abstract
Abstract photography is something unique and different. It includes lots of lines and different shapes.Within abstraction there can be many types of photographs and anything can be abstract. A lot of art is considered to be abstract.
The Formal Elements
Focus:
Light: Line: Repetition: Shape: Space: Texture: Value/Tone: |
Which areas appear clearest or sharpest in the photograph? Which do not?
Which areas of the photograph are brightest? Are there any shadows? Does the photograph allow you to guess the time of day? Is the light natural or artificial? Harsh or soft? Reflected or direct? Are there objects in the photograph that act as lines? Are they straight, curvy, thin, thick? Do the lines create direction in the photograph? Do they outline? Do the lines show movement or energy? Are there any objects, shapes or lines which repeat and create a pattern? Do you see geometric (straight edged) or organic (curvy) shapes? Which are they? Is there depth to the photograph or does it seem shallow? What creates this appearance? Are there important negative (empty) spaces in addition to positive (solid) spaces? Is there depth created by spatial illusions i.e. perspective? If you could touch the surface of the photograph how would it feel? How do the objects in the picture look like they would feel? Is there a range of tones from dark to light? Where is the darkest value? Where is the lightest? |
Abstract photo shoot
For this homework I was set the task of taking some abstract pictures so I went out and took some pictures of some different objects which I thought matched abstraction. I think this went well as I got some good pictures and got to explore abstraction.

I chose this picture because its very different and abstract. I like how there are lots of lines. The objects that create these lines are the stairs and the metal poles. The wire hanging down from one of the poles is intriguing and makes the picture more abstract and interesting. Most of the lines are thin and straight. The background makes the picture look better because it uses different colours and shows shadows.
Im not sure who the artist is.

I find this picture intriguing because you can't tell wether its a building or little pieces of glass. If you turn it around it will look disconcerting which makes it very abstract.
Photograms
Photograms are made with out cameras instead you use photographic paper and then expose the paper with objects to light for 8-10 seconds. Then you put them in the solutions and wash with water.
Here are some examples of abstract photograms:

My final piece
Overall I think my final piece went well.I inverted some of my photograms from negatives to positives this made my final piece better because it creates a confusion to why the colours are switched round. I think that my final piece represents abstraction very well as you cant really tell what was used to create these.

Ralph Eugene Meatyard
The reason I picked this artist is because i'm intrigued by he's photos and how he takes them.I think he's photographs are creative.

Zen Twigs
In this picture I see something which looks like a branch of a tree or a twig. The words i would use to describe this photo are "dark","focused" and "misty".I would describe this photo as a twig which is in focus with a dark smudgy background which looks like it was created with chalk. The background is out of focus which makes the photo slightly abstract. In a way this photo is naturalistic because the photographer hasn't used and man made objects its just nature, but in another way this picture is abstract because the background looks as if it was painted then put behind the twig or as if another twig or as if another twig was drawn on, but i can see that theres more trees and twigs behind it.There just very out of of focus which helps make the picture more unique and abstract. This is because i've never seen anything like it. The picture doesn't have a lot of elements yet it seems so detailed. It has different shades and tones which adds another dimension to it. It has parts in the background in the background where it looks like the sunlight has reflected on it and caused shadows and reflections.
It looks like this picture was a medium format camera.

Saul Leiter in focus
Saul Leiter was an american takes abstract pictures and in some pictures covers up some of the photo. I find this intriguing because it makes me wonder why his done this and what he's trying to hide in the picture maybe this is because he's a painter so he sees photography in a different way and has a different eye to the rest of us.
homework
WWW:My pictures look similar to Saul lieter and there abstract, I think the large blocks of colour work well and I like the shadows
EBI:My pictures where more straight and parallel to the edge.

Paintings by Saul Lieter
comparison
I picked these 2 pictures because they are similar. The first thing I noticed where the large expanses of blue. There are also splashes of red and yellow in the corner of both pictures. Both pictures are partly abstract. We can tell the photograph on the right is a picture of some buildings which are reflected in a large piece of glass which could be a shop window whereas the painting on the left is completely non-representational. Another difference I noticed was the difference in proportions. The painting on the left is landscape on the other hand the painting on the right is portrait.
My Painting
I picked this picture because it looked like it would be easier to paint and some of the colours are clear
Focus
In this task I was experimenting with focus and I went around the school and took pictures. What I like about these pictures is
Saul leiter gallery trip
Outside school
In these photos some are more in focus than the other i've done this intentionally because i was looking at taking pictures in focus. Some of these pictures went better than the others they worked well because the weather was sunny so there was good lighting.
My Final images
I edited some of my photographs in photoshop for my final piece.
